History of Madmaheshwar/Madhyamaheshwar Temple

Madhyamaheshwar is a Lord Shiva temple which is the fourth temple on the Panch Kedar pilgrimage circuit. Other temples in the circuit include Kedarnath, Tungnath, Rudranath, and Kalpeshwar. According to the Indian epic Mahabharata, the Pandavas were looking for Lord Shiva to attain salvation after the bloodshed of the Kurukshetra war.

A distraught Shiva was trying to escape from the Pandavas by assuming the form of a bull or Nandi. However, the strong-willed Pandavas saw Shiva in the hills of Guptakashi and tried to capture him forcibly by their tail and legs. But the bull disappeared and Lord Shiva reappeared in different parts at 5 different places in the Garhwal region.

The hump arose in Kedarnath, the arms in Tungnath, the stomach, and navel in Madmaheshwar, the face emerged in Rudranath and finally the head and hair appeared in Kalpeshwar. The Pandavas then built temples at these five Kedars and attained salvation with the blessings of Lord Shiva.
